Many people struggle with turning left and right from main road into a side road, below I have written down how you should do this.
First thing you will need to do is check your mirrors. This will be your primary mirror first followed by your side door Mirrors.
Turning left from a main road into a side road
Once you have established where your turning is apply your MSM routine – check your centre mirror to see if there is a car behind you and how far they are, then check your side door mirror to see if there is a cyclist/ motor bike.
Put your indicators/signal on to tell road users you are turning left
if there is a car behind make sure it isn’t to close to you start coming of you accelerator (also known as the gas) and gently start pressing the foot brake, look into the road you are turning into and reduce your speed down to at least around 8 mph in a petrol car (around 10 mph in a diesel or the car if any slower could will lose control if 2end gear is selected ask your driving instructor for guidance).
Which gear should you turn in?
this is a question commonly asked and it all depends on your car and the speed you are traveling at, in a good with clear road, it will be best if you selected 2nd gear, if the road is narrow and you can’t see in to the road properly it will be 1st gear.
If the road is narrow or has parked cars go in with caution there may be a car approaching the junction and be on your side of the road if it is you need to hold back and not turn in, if you cant see in properly select 1st gear and creep in using clutch control.
Look out for pedestrian stepping on to the road and look in your side door mirror just before turning there could be a motor bike or a cyclist if there is and they are close, do not turn and slow the car down, if they are far then it is safe for you to turn.
Don’t Coast
Coasting is driving with the clutch down or in neutral gear the engine is not driving and you could speed up/loose control this could lead the foot brake being less effective and you could loose control of the car.
